Well, I had this drafted up not long after posted about the idea here. While I don't have a lot of WIP's, I do have a few things that really need to get done by target dates. Then I got sick and didn't do much of anything for a few days but here's my list of 12 goals for 2012 (along with a ton of other crochet and knitting that shall be accomplished!

~~1. Finish and mail the Snape Birthday Project - Currently 85% done~~
Completed, mailed and now that the recipient has received it I can post the photo of it. So here is my crocheted wallhanging, "Always"

2. Finish and mail bonzaibetz's Molly Sweater from the LoveforLily auction - status ~~3/4 done~~
99% done. Finished, boxed, addressed and sitting on floor of car to go to post office Tuesday morning. Was going to take it today but had car issues so just went straight to work then called hubby for a jumpstart so I could come home :D

3. Plan, make and mail Reducio Swap #18

4. Complete eldest's Green Bay afghan/wallhanging by May 1 - status designed and plotted

5. Complete Middle's Teal Afghan by May 1 - status 1/8th done

6. Complete Celtic shawl by May 1

7. Finish my Christmas Gingerbread Shawl - status 1/2 done

8. Make 6 Prayer Shawls - status 1/3 done

9. Make 3 Lapghans for prayer shawl group

10. Make 2 granny ghans for The Linus Connection

Lately

So I've spent most of this week sick, heading to work in the mornings and then pretty much coming home and sleeping till Sir Dragon Preacher would arrive home in the evenings. I'd stay up for a while the sleep more, rinse - repeat.

Doing a bit better today but this will definitely be an 'at home' weekend for us except for church Sunday.

Last weekend however, we made an overnight trip to OKC for what was supposed to have been a church outing to see the Passages exhibit there at the Museum of Art. We arrived there Friday afternoon and checked into our motel.

The exhibit was wonderful though no photos were allowed. However, after going through that exhibit, we visited all the other exhibits there since we were on our own. They had two 'visiting' exhibits. Another that did not allow photos taken but was rather wonderful entitled Faded Elegance: Photos of Havana. The work was striking and breathtaking.

There also was a whimsical exhibit called Poodles & Pastries that was interesting. A few favorites below:

However, my most favorites of the day were in the permanent collection.

From there, we began a leisurely trip back home with a stop for lunch along the way. A very good weekend.

The Weekend

Had a very sudden and unexpected but very happy trip come up this past weekend as we learned one of my best friends' son was competing in a nationwide clay shooting competition in Arkansas, only about five hours from us. He competed Saturday and Sunday and I only found this out on Friday morning. Managed to get a very good motel room rate and when I got off work, we ran the errands we had to do and took off. It was a beautiful drive there and home the next evening as well. The competition was good and it was great to see Heather and Noah. He did quite well, too. At age 15 and having been competitive shooting for less than two years, he placed 14th out of 212 entrants of all ages. The squad he shot with included the current Arkansas state champ, 2 US Open winners. The overall winner of the shoot was a three time world champion. I'd say he did brilliantly at placing 14th!

Honoring the Unsung Heros

Today is the 10th anniversary of a day that like December 7th 1941 has gone down in infamy.....

Today, at our church service this morning, Sir Dragon Preacher and I wanted to remember this day but to remember it as a day of hope as well as remembrance and so, we chose to observe it by honoring the members of our church family who serve in law enforcement, as fire fighters and as paramedics/emt's for being there when everyone else needs them the most, sometimes as part of their job, sometimes as volunteers, sometimes above and beyond what is expected of them.

It surprised them. But it was nice to see them so honored.

It was a good day.

Day 28 - Another wonderful day off with Sir Dragon Preacher as we headed out to church and then just spent the afternoon together relaxing and working on various projects we had.

Day 29 - A lovely thunderstorm that brought much needed rain and cooler temperatures

Day 30 - A productive day at work and the monthly newsletters being finished and mailed.... Have I mentioned lately how much I love my job? :D

Oregon Day 10 and 11 - The Road Home

Having spent the night at Walmart's Tire and Automotive Center until they opened and the punctured tire could be repaired, I was on my way by 8 a.m. and also discovered that had I kept on going through the night I would have missed this gorgeous high desert scene as I headed for the Utah border

Yes, that is smoke at the far right coming from the top of one of the mountains.

I also would probably not have stopped at the rest area that was also a scenic point for Lake Bonneville. Yes I know you don't see any water here but that's because this area and the surrounding used to be the bottom of a massive prehistoric lake bed. It's a really odd feeling to be standing there after knowing it used to be completely submerged.

The ride was uneventful and beautiful as I continued through Utah and back into Wyoming where I again crossed the Continental Divide at two points this one, and another at Elevation: 7000 feet

As I approached the area around Laramie Wyoming on I-80, I spotted a beautiful rainbow

I was rather surprised as I continued on to realize it was actually a 'double' rainbow but was unable to get a photo of it. That was fine, it was an experience just to see it and take in the beauty of the colors and the scenery of the Rockies.

So I was even more surprised to find another rainbow further down the road, though from the curve, I suspect it was the other end of the same rainbow.

And even more thrilled to see again, the double arcs

There was so much I saw, so much I did and still so much I missed! I look forward to the next time I head west!

Days 20 and 21 of gratitude were for beauty, safe travels, wonderful friends and a wonderful Sir Dragon Preacher who was waiting for me when I got home!

The only thing that could have made this trip more perfect would have been if he could have had the time off to go with me!

Oregon Day 9

Subtitle the Long and Winding Road? Or maybe the long and high speed? *grins*

Yes, I admit, that one of the best things about the trip was the 75 mph speed limit most of the way! Yeah, considering the detour to see the Bonneville Salt Flats, I'm sure you're not surprised.

And I admit, I did the "tourist thing" all the way out, as well as all the way back. Leaving lady_karelia's, there were tears... a very drama moment.... At least until I realized my overhead light was not going out and after trying to turn it off, saw the "passenger door ajar" light on my dash and had to ask lady_karelia to reshut the door, the idea being it saved me from getting back out.

Rrrright...

Cause I started to pull out again and the "trunk ajar" light came on so there I am getting out to shut the trunk again. So much for a serious dramatic and sad good bye.

At least it kept me from sobbing as I made my way to the busy interstate and through Portland during the latter part of rush hour!

I had wanted to take a short side trip to Mt. Hood but the scenic byway did not prove as helpful as it showed on the map and, while I did get to see Mt Hood, never did find a good spot for photos.

Back on the interstate and I went on a way before stopping for Multnomah Falls. Amazing. Breathtaking. Beautiful.

From there, I continued on until I reached Bonneville Dam and stopped to visit.

Pulling up to the gate, the guard gives directions to the visitor center and then advises you that he must look in your trunk... Uhm yeah...

For those wondering, the cream canvas bag is clothes, the black bag is extra things for laptop, rest? Hey, one must be sure they have enough crochet/knit projects when traveling, right? :D

Couldn't resist stopping a bit further down the road at a view area to take some pictures of the Columbia River Gorge and Cascade Mountains

And there is crossing the 45th Parallel, equal distance between pole and equator!

Once into Idaho, the plan was to continue on... Yeah that was the plan. Unfortunately, about 8:30 pm in Boise, I was pulled over by a sheriff who wanted to ask if I knew my right tear tire was flat *insert headdesking here*

Getting out, I walked around the back of the car to find:

The business end of a phillips screwdriver sticking out of my bumper. Apparently, it had come off of some truck and my tire caught it, punctured the tire then kicked up into my bumper. Fortunately, the officer had been behind me, saw the tire go down and alerted me right then.

Which leads me to Day 18's gratitude - Thankful not only for all the beauty I saw traveling but Ford Emergency Road Service! Spare donut on, I made my way to the nearest Walmart and spent the night till they opened at 7 a.m. and they could fix it and I was on my way again.

And that's where I spotted this!

Oregon, Days 6, 7 and 8

Day 6 was very much laid back and relaxed with crochet, and just chilling out and finally watching Deathly Hallows Part 1 in preparation for a trip the next day to see Part 2. No, I had not seen it yet and after watching it on DVD, was glad I had not spent the time and money to see it in the cinema. Of all eight movies, I have to say this is my least liked and it even left me wondering if I wanted to see Part 2. lady_karelia assured me that Part 2 was much better so the plan was to see it the next day.

Waking the next morning after a previous day of HP DH Part 1, curries, cheese, wine, friends, crochet and just wonderful relaxed time, I was now looking forward to a trip to an ops shop and the movie with lady_Karelia and Little Man (who really has grown and is not so little anymore), all of which proved to be marvelous and yes, Part 2 was wicked awesome and is tied with CoS as my favorite! We won't discuss the tears at various points throughout DH Part 2, suffice it to say it would have been quite profitable to have stock in a tissue manufacturer then! The day was started off with delicious pancakes and chocolate sauce courtesy of Little Man who created the sauce from scratch on his own. While it may sound repetitive, the evening ended with a delicious dinner (was this the nice we had that wonderful beef with roquefort sauce, lady_karelia?) I've lost track as there were so many wonderful dishes. Palek Paneer, beef curries, chicken curries, chick pea curry all served with Naan. Wine, tea, coffee....

Eventually, Day 8 arrived and we returned to the first ops shop as well as a second at which I found a pair of very comfortable, practically new sandals for only $5! We also had an exercise session involving a very nice very well made very heavy sofa bench and a flight of stairs. I am thankful all of us were involved in carrying it and no one was videoing it! Lol

The week was a continuous run of good food, good times, relaxing and being with some very special friends that are absolutely amazing people and these days I was so grateful for being in their company!

Unfortunately, there always is a time for going home and Day 9 eventually came

Oregon, Days 3, 4 and 5

I slept under a quilt with no a/c on and the balcony door open so air would come in through the screen. This was absolutely wonderful to do after weeks of 108-114 and above temps here at home. Not just this night but every night I was there. It was so cool I actually did pick up the crochet I brought along and began to crochet a shawl (which was finished a couple of days later.

It was rather laid back for Saturday with a trip out to some amazing stores to get some groceries for dinner (amazing Curry cooked by dorkboy) and to check out the local LYS.

From there it was to Trader Joe's - So wish we had one here!

It was a night of more crochet, curry, and good friends - and Saturday Night Drabble Chat! Oh and good wine!

Sunday was somewhat laid back as well with more crochet and curry and guess the music!

Leaving here late Thursday morning, August 11th, I took off and made my way out of Oklahoma into Kansas where I was excited to see wind farms. Having heard about them, it was nice to see one actually in existence in Westfall, KS

Turned out as I drove on through the day/night/day, I learned, there are many more in use around the country, in Colorado, Wyoming (lots in Wyoming), Utah, Idaho and Oregon itself (again, lots of them in those states.

I managed to stop and spend some time with saphira_ll in Denver and we had a wonderful time at IHOP before I got back on the road again. I had hoped to meet up with her on the way back, but events did not allow that to happen. I am grateful for having had a chance to meet and spend time with for dinner in Denver! and for her wonderful dragon gifts!!!

It was night when I first arrived in Wyoming and in the morning, discovered, Wyoming is... Uhm brown? Lots and lots of brown! But the views!!! Wow!

Next stop, Utah!

Notice that my a/c is not on even at 11 a.m.? That is soooooo nice after weeks of 108 to 114 temperatures back home! I was probably the only person standing in the middle of the salt flats desert going... "Gee, this is comfortable!" Lol

It was 3 a.m. (Pacific Time) when I did arrive at lady_karelia's but it was Soooo worth the drive, first to see her again and second, for the gorgeous scenery on the way!

Been awhile!

Been awhile

Life has been hectic and yet slow.

Hectic at work. Change in boss as old boss asked for and got transfer and new boss assigned.

Had been completing going away gift for her:

Sir Dragon Preacher has new pastoral position as well once again. Small UMC church about 36 miles from here. Still keeping fulltime secular job at chicken plant (small church so cannot pay full time salary) but that's okay. The fact he has a church once again has made such a difference and though its more work, doesn't seem so.

Slow has come from the weather.... temps have been over 100 for past 3 or 4 weeks now. I find myself rather listless during daytime hours when it's hot.

Weather had also resulted in a tornado coming through. We came out fine but good friends of ours about 6 miles from us have had tree come down on porch of their house and house moved off foundations about 3 inches which is enough to make it not safe and because the house is 100 yrs old, not repairable.

I have been talked into taking part in the SSHG Exchange on LiveJournal. My piece for it has been completed and submitted :D

Planning to finally take this year's vacation time to travel to Oregon. Though plan trip has been moved from July to August due to some scheduling conflicts.

A very happy five year anniversary to my favorite fiends! You know who you are :)

Memories of Willie

The world lost a good man the other night.

No, he wasn't a nobel prize winner or a great statesman. Not even an actor of great reknown

He was just Willie Stewart and he lived in a small town in the southwest United States doing what he did best, being himself.

I first met Willie when I started working for the church that he was a member of and also happened to live next door to. Actually I heard about Willie before I met him as the woman I was replacing as church secretary explained that Willie Stewart was the man who made sure the trash was out to the curb every Monday morning for pick up and also mowed the church lawn.

The next week, I met Willie for myself as he stopped in to introduce himself 'proper'. From that day on, Willie would stop in every so often to pick up a check, let me know the mowing was done or just to say hi. Willie cared about his church and would keep a eye on the building from his house daily. It was not unusual for him to pop in and say he found a door unlocked on the other side of the building but that he'd go back out that way and make sure it was locked.

Sure sometimes Willie could be frustrating but he was always Willie. There weren't many in this town that if you mentioned just his first name didn't know who you were talking about. Even yesterday as I let some people know that his funeral was this afternoon, they knew exactly who I was referring to. It isn't just small town effect because there are many names that can be mentioned and someone says "who?" but not Willie's.

What was it about this ordinary man that made him so memorable? I think it was the sense of just being himself, of what you saw was what you got with Willie. Maybe it was the fact that when Willie saw something he could help with, even if just a simple matter of making sure all the doors were locked when they should be, Willie did it.

Willie would pop in just to say hi and if you were having a bad day, manage to bring out a smile just by being himself, usually with some sort of joke.

The world just got a wee bit quieter and dimmer for the loss of Willie. He will be missed.

8 Years And He's Still the One!

Our anniversary was Tuesday and since we both work, our celebration is this weekend with our favorite outing! The Muskogee Ren Faire.

For my gift, Sir Dragon Preacher got me a new sewing machine and it's the first ever all brand new one I've ever owned. A lower range Janome but sufficient for my needs and I LOVE it.

So, of course I had to use it and use it I did. Made him a monk's garb for tomorrow and a wizard robe to go over a purple sundress with medieval-looking embroidery on it.

So a couple of hours ago, my daughter Eileen called to tell me my son Jonathan had an accident. No, not with a car thankfully but serious enough to scare me and send me calling him.

He was on a trip to see about a youth minister's position that had been offered to him and in the course of visiting there was playing soccer. While, as goalie, saving the play and keeping the goal from scoring, he was hit in the head. Hard enough to remember nothing about it. Not remember actually completing the save. Not remember continuing to play. Not remembering he's supposed to preach tomorrow morning at his home church (which is now cancelled).

Fortunately, the people he was with, one of them is the director of the ER there and took him right in for an exam and catscan. I've spoken to both Jonathan and the doctor and am somewhat assured.

Also have been assured the memory confusion/loss will clear up and has somewhat already. He will be spending the night at the doctor's house as well so there is someone(s) watching over him for the next few hours.

Some weeks you wonder just how you got through it. This has been one of them

Joe and Pneumonia: Never expected it was that. Flu maybe but fortunately, as the doctor said, we caught it early and the antibiotics are working. He's still coughing a lot and has pulled a muscle from doing so much of it but he's definitely improved some since Tuesday.

Work: Sometimes, deadlines collide. That has been the case this week and with a bit of help Thursday and Friday mornings from two wonderful ladies in the congregation, I managed to get published,copied, collated, folded and addressed and mailed:

225 monthly newletters
115 stewardship campaign packets
20 meeting reminder cards

as well as completing regular duties of:

copying, folding, collating 60 bulletins
folding 14 more
prepping sanctuary for service Sunday
checks and bookkeeping
and other sundry duties as required

Taz: Those of you who follow (should be all of you LOL) know I usually drive our black 2002 Grand Prix SE lovingly named Taz. You also recall Taz has been rather ornery on some occasions with repairs. Recently, it seems the transmission is having trouble and considering this was already rebuilt once, we did some looking around and found Merlin.

Merlin is a 2007 Mercury Milan dealer leftover. With only 75 miiles on him, he'll come with 34 months of a bumper to bumper warranty so that if anything happens I can take him to any Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer for service. 5 speed manual, a/c, heater, cd/am/fm and I believe he also has the plug in for mp3 (they made 2 versions and pretty sure this one has the connection). Tardis Blue with Beige interior. We trade in in a couple of hours. Photos will follow

Excited but a bit bummed as not having had any car payments for 10 years now, that part is so gonna take some getting used to.

Ita M. Breslin 1925-2009

Halloween, derived from Samhain, is the time of year when the veil between two worlds is the thinnest. In my history, was my godmother/aunt, Ita Marie Breslin, who crocheted ever since I can remember. She never used patterns, she just saw in her mind what she wanted and set to work. The gold hat is one she made for my mother years ago. Wednesday, 7 October 2009, 'Aunt' Ita crossed over to the otherside of the veil.

In the past couple of nights since learning this, I sat down and reconstructed the hat as a tribute to her ability, crafting and love.

So I present Breslin's Beret orginally designed by Ita M. Breslin in the 70's. Pattern available here

Labor Day Weekend Day 3

... was Sunday and we again slept till we woke which turned out to be about 9 a.m.ish. A light breakfast in the room and we dressed and packed and loaded up the car to head home. On the way, as we were getting near the exit off I-40 for Sallisaw, we thought about seeing some things there we wanted to see.

The first stop was the 14 Flags Museum in downtown Sallisaw. Open every day and free, it's a sort of 'unmanned museum' set up in old log cabins, the first of which had been a judge's house. Stepping in the front doors to a small area, you could view the rooms set up from behind a plexiglass divider and see what life for the settlers here was like.

From there, we drove a few miles to the sight of Sequoyah's 1829 Cabin, the Cherokee Chief. Located on his original lands, it is now a historic site kept up by the Park Service. To prevent erosion of the cabin, it is now housed within a stone building with other exhibits including a typewriter who's keys are the cherokee alphabet.

and so ends our Labor Day weekend mini trip :D

Joe's birthday was in July but during the week rent was due so we never got a chance to do anything special for him. We decided instead, to get away for the Labor Day weekend since he'd have four days off with the holiday and I'd have three. I went ahead and took one vacation day for that Friday and we had a joint birthday weekend since mine was 3 September.

One of the things Joe had been wanting to do was visit Shepherd's Chapel in Gravette AR. It's pastored by a minister he respects greatly and has learned much from. So we found out what time to be there for the daily live bible study and after breakfast, headed on the 2.5 hour drive there.

We arrived with time to spare and were able to get to know some of the daily attendees as well as spend some time talking with the pastor, Rev. Arnold Murray as well as visit the bookshop and find these:

As you can see, Joe's quite happy and we had a wonderful visit.

From there, we drove across 87 miles to Tulsa and checked into our room at the Extended Stay. It was great and I recommend them....

...Though it does make you pause a bit when you pull up to your hotel and see

From there, we went out for dinner at Kilkenny's Irish Pub on 15th for authentic Fish & Chips for me and Boxty for him (the Kilmacow)

I also had created a drink recipe for a contest within a swap I was in and the bartender was quite willing to make the Billywig Blink for me :D

For dessert with shared Guinness Dark Chocolate cake with Bailey's Whipped Irish Cream

On the way to the pub, we parked near a shop that had used books on sale... All of these for a grand total of $5.97!!

After dinner, it was back to the hotel and just relax with Flashdance and Grease 1 and 2 on tv and some reading for Joe and crochet for me!
